Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit

Government of India, sanctioned and approved (No.V.25011/570(i)/2010-HR, dated July 10, 2013) the scheme for ‘Establishment of Multi-Disciplinary Research Units (MRUs) in the Government Medical Colleges/Research Institutions’ during the 12th Plan period as a path-breaking initiative to develop/strength the health research infrastructure in the country to fulfill the newly allocated function of the Department related to the “Promotion, Coordination and Development of Basic, Applied and Clinical Research with special focus on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)”.
R.G. Kar Medical College under the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal received the scheme for the establishment of the First Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit in the state of West Bengal in 2013. The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) regarding the setting of MRU in RGKMC, Kolkata was signed between DHR, Govt. of India and Dept. of Health & Family Welfare, West Bengal on August 19, 2014 (No.V.25011/118/2014-HR).
Dr. Anjan Adhikari, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology of the Institute was the First NodalOfficer in Charge (January 2014 to April, 2019) of MRU, RGKMC, Kolkata.
Initiative has been taken to construct and equipped the laboratory following the guidelines of Department of Health & Research (ICMR) in the 4th floor of Academic Building, RGKMC, Kolkata (Area: 400 sq. metres). The lab is well equipped for all the molecular & cell culture based research work.
Dr. Anadi Roy Chowdhury, Associate Professor, Department of Pathology pursued as Nodal Officer in Charge of MRU for a short duration (from April to July 2019) after Dr. Anjan Adhikari.

Summary of Activities
  1. From July, 2020 to till date MRU, RGKMCH, Kolkata conducting Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and RT-PCR test for the detection of COVID-19 infection in hospital and community patients.
  2. After receiving a request from Deputy Secretary, ICMR-DHR on July 2020 MRU make necessary arrangements for updated molecular research and applied for RT-PCR of Covid-19 in Nodal Centre, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on December 2020. MRU, RGKMC, Kolkata got approval and been enlisted as testing facility in ICMR Portal.
  3. An extended team member of medical laboratory technologists (MT) of other departments of the hospital has joined with MRU staffs and working dedicatedly.
  4. From May, 2021, a new clinic at Emergency OPD for 24X7 has been started by MRU team by the order of the authority for testing RAT and RT-PCR in all hospitalized patients to expedite admission procedure or treatment facilities in hospital.
  5. So far, more than 50,000 RAT and nearly 8000 RT-PCR tests for COVID-19 has performed by MRU, RGKMC, Kolkata.
  6. Several short term Institutional Projects has started after receiving Institutional Ethical Approval.
  7. All initiative has taken to increase in collaborative research activities with other Governmental Medical Colleges and Research Institutes.
  8. An initiative was undertaken by MRU staff members to prepared Annual Report-2021 of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata. The publication is under process.
  9. Attended “10th International Science Congress” (ISC-2022).
  10. MRU staffs attended a workshop on “Basic serology and molecular diagnostic methods for diagnosis of viral infections” on 10th May,2023, organised by VRDL, R.G.Kar Medical College & Hospital.
  11. Participated in “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign from 15th September to 2nd October, an initiative by Central Govt. India.
  12. MRU has submitted 4 projects in the last ethical committee meeting on 5th January 2024 & all of them has got approval.
  13. Attended ICMR-DHR -4 conclave meeting on 16th January,2024.
  14. A workshop organised by MRU about Genomic DNA Isolation and Real Time Gene Expression Technique on 29th January 2024.
  15. 3 multicentric project proposals have been submitted to ICMR-DHR for funding.
